Rummy Nose Tetra
Tetras – Care Guide & Aquarium Companions
Tetras are colourful, peaceful and active freshwater fish that are perfect for community aquariums. Known for their schooling behaviour and wide variety of colours and patterns, tetras are especially attractive when kept in larger groups.
Popular varieties include Neon Tetras, Cardinal Tetras, Rummy Nose Tetras, Ember Tetras, Black Neon Tetras and many more.
Aquarium Care
Tank Size:
A minimum of around 40–60 litres is suitable for many smaller tetra species. Larger groups and larger varieties benefit from additional swimming space.
Water Temperature:
Generally 22°C – 28°C, depending on the species.
pH Range:
Approximately 5.5 – 7.5.
Aquarium Setup:
Tetras do well in planted aquariums with open swimming areas. Driftwood, rocks, floating plants and darker substrates can help create a natural environment and often make their colours appear more vibrant.
Good filtration and stable water quality are important for keeping tetras healthy.
Feeding
Tetras are generally omnivorous and accept a wide variety of foods, including:
-
High-quality flakes
-
Micro pellets
-
Brine shrimp
-
Daphnia
-
Bloodworms
-
Small live or frozen foods
A varied diet helps improve colour, growth and overall health.
Behaviour & Grouping
Tetras are schooling fish and should ideally be kept in groups of at least 6 or more. Larger groups usually display better schooling behaviour, stronger colours and greater confidence.
Most tetra species are peaceful, although a few varieties may occasionally show fin-nipping behaviour if kept in groups that are too small.
Suitable Tank Companions
Tetras can usually be kept with:
Rasboras • Corydoras • Small Loaches • Gouramis • Danios • Peaceful Barbs • Small Plecos • Shrimp • Snails and other peaceful community fish
Avoid housing smaller tetras with large, aggressive or predatory fish that may chase or eat them.
Important Note
Care requirements can vary between different tetra species. Always check the adult size, temperament and preferred water parameters before adding a new variety to your aquarium.
With clean water, suitable companions and a proper school size, tetras are active, colourful and rewarding fish for both beginner and experienced aquarium keepers.
