Rainbowfish – Care Guide & Aquarium Companions
Rainbowfish are colourful, active and peaceful freshwater fish known for their shimmering scales, vibrant colours and energetic swimming behaviour. They are especially attractive when kept in groups, where their natural schooling behaviour and colours become more prominent.
Popular varieties include Boesemani Rainbowfish, Red Rainbowfish, Turquoise Rainbowfish, Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish and many more.
Aquarium Care
Tank Size:
A minimum of around 75–100 litres is suitable for smaller species, while larger Rainbowfish require bigger aquariums with plenty of open swimming space.
Water Temperature:
Generally 23°C – 28°C, depending on the species.
pH Range:
Approximately 6.5 – 8.0.
Aquarium Setup:
Rainbowfish prefer aquariums with plenty of open swimming space along with plants, driftwood and rocks around the sides or background.
Good filtration, stable water quality and well-oxygenated water are important for keeping them healthy and active.
Feeding
Rainbowfish are generally omnivorous and accept a wide variety of foods, including:
-
High-quality flakes
-
Pellets
-
Brine shrimp
-
Bloodworms
-
Daphnia
-
Frozen and live foods
-
Vegetable-based foods
A varied and nutritious diet helps improve colour, growth and overall condition.
Behaviour & Grouping
Rainbowfish are social schooling fish and should ideally be kept in groups of at least 6 or more.
Keeping them in larger groups helps reduce stress and encourages more natural behaviour. Males often display stronger colours when kept with other Rainbowfish.
They are active swimmers, so sufficient open swimming space is very important.
Suitable Tank Companions
Rainbowfish can usually be kept with:
Tetras • Rasboras • Barbs • Danios • Corydoras • Loaches • Gouramis • Plecos • Peaceful Catfish and other similarly sized community fish
Avoid keeping them with very aggressive fish or extremely small species that may become stressed by their active swimming behaviour.
Important Note
Different Rainbowfish species can vary significantly in adult size and water requirements. Always check the specific variety before choosing your aquarium size and tank companions.
With clean water, plenty of swimming space, a suitable group size and a varied diet, Rainbowfish can become one of the most colourful and active highlights of a freshwater community aquarium.
