Bristlenose Pleco – Care Guide & Aquarium Companions
Bristlenose Plecos are peaceful, hardy and useful freshwater catfish known for their distinctive facial bristles and algae-grazing behaviour. They stay much smaller than many common pleco species, making them a popular choice for community and planted aquariums.
They spend much of their time grazing on algae, driftwood and surfaces around the aquarium, while also using caves and shaded areas for resting.
Aquarium Care
Tank Size:
A minimum of around 75–100 litres is recommended for an adult Bristlenose Pleco. Larger aquariums are better if keeping more than one or housing them with other bottom-dwelling fish.
Water Temperature:
Generally 23°C – 28°C.
pH Range:
Approximately 6.5 – 7.8.
Aquarium Setup:
Bristlenose Plecos do best in well-established aquariums with:
-
Driftwood
-
Caves and hiding spaces
-
Rocks
-
Live plants
-
Smooth substrate
-
Good filtration
-
Stable, clean water
Driftwood is highly recommended, as Bristlenose Plecos naturally graze on its surface and use it as part of their environment.
Feeding
Although Bristlenose Plecos are known as algae eaters, they should not depend only on aquarium algae.
Suitable foods include:
-
Algae wafers
-
Spirulina-based foods
-
Sinking pleco pellets
-
Blanched zucchini
-
Cucumber
-
Spinach
-
Green beans
-
Occasional protein-rich foods
A balanced diet helps support healthy growth and body condition.
Behaviour & Temperament
Bristlenose Plecos are generally peaceful and spend much of their time resting in caves or grazing around the aquarium.
They are often most active during the evening and at night.
Adult males can become territorial toward other male Bristlenose Plecos, especially if there are not enough caves or hiding spaces available.
Suitable Tank Companions
Bristlenose Plecos can usually be kept with:
Tetras • Rasboras • Corydoras • Rams • Gouramis • Rainbowfish • Danios • Peaceful Barbs • Loaches • Shrimp • Snails and other peaceful community fish
They can also be kept with many medium-sized cichlids when sufficient space and hiding areas are provided.
Avoid keeping them with extremely aggressive fish that may constantly attack or injure them.
Breeding
Bristlenose Plecos can breed successfully in home aquariums.
The male usually selects and guards a cave, where the female lays eggs. The male then protects and fans the eggs until they hatch.
Providing several suitable caves can encourage natural breeding behaviour.
Important Note
Bristlenose Plecos usually grow to around 10–15 cm, making them much more suitable for home aquariums than many larger pleco species.
They produce a fair amount of waste, so good filtration and regular water changes are important.
With clean water, proper feeding, driftwood and suitable hiding spaces, Bristlenose Plecos are hardy, peaceful and useful additions to freshwater community aquariums.
