Gardneri Killi Fish
Killifish – Care Guide & Aquarium Companions
Killifish are beautiful, colourful and fascinating freshwater fish known for their striking patterns, unique behaviour and wide variety of species. Many killifish stay relatively small, making them suitable for planted aquariums, species tanks and peaceful community setups.
Some species are very beginner-friendly, while others require more specific water conditions, so it is always important to check the needs of the particular variety.
Aquarium Care
Tank Size:
A minimum of around 30–50 litres is suitable for many smaller killifish species. Larger or more active varieties may require additional space.
Water Temperature:
Generally 20°C – 26°C, depending on the species.
pH Range:
Approximately 6.0 – 7.5.
Aquarium Setup:
Killifish usually prefer planted aquariums with plenty of hiding spaces, floating plants, driftwood and gentle water movement.
A tight-fitting lid is extremely important, as killifish are excellent jumpers and may escape through even small openings.
Stable water quality and gentle filtration are recommended.
Feeding
Killifish generally prefer protein-rich foods and often respond especially well to live and frozen foods.
Suitable foods include:
-
Brine shrimp
-
Bloodworms
-
Daphnia
-
Mosquito larvae
-
Micro worms
-
High-quality small pellets
-
Fine flakes
A varied diet helps improve colour, breeding condition and overall health.
Behaviour & Grouping
Killifish behaviour can vary between species.
Many are peaceful, but males of some varieties may become territorial toward one another, especially in smaller aquariums.
They can be kept as pairs, trios or small groups depending on the species and available aquarium space.
Providing plants and visual barriers helps reduce aggression and gives weaker fish places to hide.
Suitable Tank Companions
Peaceful killifish can usually be kept with:
Small Rasboras • Tetras • Corydoras • Small Plecos • Peaceful Shrimp • Snails and other calm community fish
Avoid keeping them with large, aggressive or highly territorial species.
Very small tank companions should also be selected carefully, as some larger killifish may eat tiny fish or shrimp.
Important Note
Killifish include many different species with different temperature, water and breeding requirements.
Some species are annual killifish, while others are non-annual and can live for several years with proper care.
Always research the exact species before adding it to your aquarium.
With stable water conditions, a secure lid, suitable food and peaceful companions, killifish can be one of the most colourful and interesting additions to a freshwater aquarium.
