Gobies – Care Guide & Aquarium Companions

Gobies are fascinating bottom-dwelling fish known for their unique body shapes, interesting behaviour and active personalities. Freshwater gobies are especially popular in planted, river-style and community aquariums.

Depending on the species, gobies can range from peaceful nano fish to more territorial bottom dwellers, so it is important to check the requirements of the specific variety before adding them to an aquarium.

Aquarium Care

Tank Size:
A minimum of around 40–60 litres is suitable for many smaller freshwater gobies, while larger species require more space.

Water Temperature:
Generally 22°C – 28°C, depending on the species.

pH Range:
Approximately 6.5 – 8.0.

Aquarium Setup:
Gobies usually prefer aquariums with plenty of rocks, caves, driftwood and hiding spaces.

Many species enjoy:

  • Fine sand or smooth gravel

  • Rocks and caves

  • Driftwood

  • Live plants

  • Good filtration

  • Clean, oxygen-rich water

  • Moderate water movement

Some river-dwelling gobies especially appreciate stronger water flow and high oxygen levels.

Feeding

Most freshwater gobies enjoy a protein-rich diet.

Suitable foods include:

  • Sinking pellets

  • Brine shrimp

  • Bloodworms

  • Daphnia

  • Small frozen foods

  • Live foods

  • Insect-based foods

Some species also graze on algae and biofilm, so a mature aquarium can be beneficial.

Behaviour & Grouping

Gobies are usually active around the bottom of the aquarium and often spend time resting on rocks or exploring caves.

Their temperament depends on the species. Some can be kept peacefully in groups, while others may become territorial toward other gobies.

Providing multiple caves and hiding spaces helps reduce territorial disputes.

Suitable Tank Companions

Depending on the species, freshwater gobies can usually be kept with:

Tetras • Rasboras • Danios • Rainbowfish • Corydoras • Small Plecos • Peaceful Barbs • Shrimp • Snails and other peaceful community fish

Very small shrimp or fry may be eaten by larger gobies.

Avoid keeping them with highly aggressive fish or other bottom-dwelling species that may constantly compete for territory.

Important Note

Not all gobies have the same requirements. Some species are fully freshwater, while others may require brackish water as they mature.

Always confirm the exact goby species before adding it to your aquarium.

With clean water, suitable hiding spaces, proper feeding and compatible tank mates, gobies can be one of the most unique and entertaining additions to a freshwater aquarium.
