Danios – Care Guide & Aquarium Companions

Danios are active, hardy and energetic freshwater schooling fish known for their fast swimming, attractive patterns and easy-going nature. They are excellent choices for community aquariums and are especially popular with beginners because many species adapt well to a wide range of aquarium conditions.

Popular varieties include Zebra Danios, Leopard Danios, Giant Danios, Pearl Danios and Celestial Pearl Danios.

Aquarium Care

Tank Size:
A minimum of around 50–60 litres is suitable for many smaller Danio species. Larger and more active varieties require additional swimming space.

Water Temperature:
Generally 20°C – 26°C, depending on the species.

pH Range:
Approximately 6.5 – 7.5.

Aquarium Setup:
Danios are very active swimmers and prefer aquariums with plenty of open swimming space.

A suitable setup should include:

  • Open swimming areas

  • Live plants around the sides and background

  • Driftwood and rocks

  • Good filtration

  • Clean, oxygen-rich water

  • Moderate water movement

  • A secure aquarium lid

A lid is recommended because Danios can be strong jumpers.

Feeding

Danios are omnivorous and generally easy to feed.

Suitable foods include:

  • High-quality flakes

  • Micro pellets

  • Brine shrimp

  • Daphnia

  • Bloodworms

  • Frozen foods

  • Small live foods

  • Insect-based foods

A varied diet helps maintain strong colour, healthy growth and active behaviour.

Behaviour & Grouping

Danios are schooling fish and should ideally be kept in groups of at least 6 or more.

Larger groups help them feel more secure and encourage more natural swimming and schooling behaviour.

They are very active and may occasionally chase one another, but this is usually normal social behaviour within the group.

Suitable Tank Companions

Danios can usually be kept with:

Tetras • Rasboras • Corydoras • Gouramis • Peaceful Barbs • Loaches • Small Plecos • Rainbowfish and other peaceful community fish

Choose tank companions that can tolerate the same temperature range and are comfortable with the active swimming style of Danios.

Avoid very slow-moving or highly delicate fish that may become stressed by constant activity.

Breeding

Danios are generally egg-scattering fish.

During breeding, females release eggs among plants or substrate while males fertilise them. Adult fish may eat the eggs, so a separate breeding setup is often used when raising fry.

Fine-leaved plants, spawning mops or breeding mesh can help protect the eggs.

Important Note

Different Danio species can vary significantly in size and preferred temperature.

For example, Giant Danios require much more swimming space than smaller Zebra Danios, while some species prefer cooler water than typical tropical community fish.

Always check the exact Danio species before choosing aquarium size and tank companions.

With clean water, plenty of swimming space, a proper group size and a varied diet, Danios are active, hardy and entertaining fish for freshwater community aquariums.
