Bluepet XF-280 Sponge Filter
Sponge Filter – Aquarium Filtration Guide
A Sponge Filter is a simple, reliable and aquarium-safe filtration system that uses an air pump to pull water through a porous sponge.
It provides both mechanical and biological filtration, making it especially useful for shrimp tanks, breeding aquariums, fry tanks, hospital tanks and small community setups.
Because the water flow is gentle, Sponge Filters are ideal for delicate fish, baby fish and shrimp.
How It Works
A Sponge Filter connects to an air pump using airline tubing.
As air rises through the filter, it creates water movement that pulls aquarium water through the sponge.
The sponge:
-
Traps debris and suspended particles
-
Provides surface area for beneficial bacteria
-
Helps support the aquarium nitrogen cycle
-
Improves water circulation and oxygenation
Best For
Sponge Filters are especially suitable for:
Shrimp Tanks • Fry Tanks • Breeding Tanks • Betta Tanks • Nano Aquariums • Quarantine Tanks • Hospital Tanks • Small Community Aquariums
They are also commonly used as additional biological filtration in larger aquariums.
Benefits
-
Gentle water flow
-
Safe for baby fish and shrimp
-
Excellent biological filtration
-
Helps oxygenate aquarium water
-
Easy to maintain
-
Low operating cost
-
No risk of small livestock being sucked into a powerful intake
-
Useful as both primary and backup filtration
Suitable Aquarium Companions
Sponge Filters work well with:
Neocaridina Shrimp • Caridina Shrimp • Bettas • Tetras • Rasboras • Corydoras • Rice Fish • Killifish • Guppies • Endlers • Small Plecos • Snails and Fry
They are particularly useful in tanks containing very small or delicate aquarium inhabitants.
Cleaning & Maintenance
The sponge should be cleaned when water flow begins to decrease or when too much debris collects inside it.
For best results:
-
Remove the sponge during a water change
-
Gently squeeze and rinse it in removed aquarium water
-
Avoid washing it directly under chlorinated tap water
-
Reinstall it immediately after cleaning
Cleaning it in aquarium water helps preserve the beneficial bacteria living inside the sponge.
Air Pump Requirement
A Sponge Filter requires an air pump to operate.
You may also need:
-
Airline tubing
-
Air control valve
-
Non-return/check valve
The air pump size should be selected according to the aquarium and sponge filter size.
Important Note
Sponge Filters provide excellent biological filtration but may not remove fine particles as effectively as some power filters or canister filters.
For heavily stocked or larger aquariums, they can be combined with another filtration system for additional mechanical filtration and water circulation.
With proper sizing and regular maintenance, a Sponge Filter is one of the safest, easiest and most dependable filtration options for freshwater aquariums.
