Barbs – Care Guide & Aquarium Companions

Barbs are active, colourful and hardy freshwater fish known for their energetic swimming behaviour and attractive patterns. They are popular in community aquariums and are available in many varieties, including Tiger Barbs, Cherry Barbs, Rosy Barbs, Odessa Barbs, Denison Barbs and many more.

Most Barbs are schooling fish and perform best when kept in groups.

Aquarium Care

Tank Size:
A minimum of around 60–75 litres is suitable for many smaller Barb species, while larger or more active varieties require significantly more swimming space.

Water Temperature:
Generally 22°C – 28°C, depending on the species.

pH Range:
Approximately 6.0 – 7.5.

Aquarium Setup

Barbs are active swimmers and prefer aquariums with plenty of open space.

A suitable setup should include:

  • Open swimming areas

  • Live plants around the sides and background

  • Driftwood

  • Rocks

  • Good filtration

  • Clean, oxygen-rich water

  • Moderate water movement

  • A secure aquarium lid

Larger species benefit from longer aquariums that provide more horizontal swimming space.

Feeding

Barbs are generally omnivorous and easy to feed.

Suitable foods include:

  • High-quality flakes

  • Pellets

  • Brine shrimp

  • Bloodworms

  • Daphnia

  • Frozen foods

  • Live foods

  • Spirulina and vegetable-based foods

A varied diet helps maintain strong colour, healthy growth and active behaviour.

Behaviour & Grouping

Most Barbs should be kept in groups of at least 6 or more.

Keeping them in larger groups can help reduce stress and encourage natural schooling behaviour.

Some species, especially Tiger Barbs, can become fin-nippers when kept in groups that are too small.

Providing enough swimming space and maintaining a proper group size can help reduce this behaviour.

Suitable Tank Companions

Depending on the species, Barbs can usually be kept with:

Danios • Rasboras • Rainbowfish • Corydoras • Loaches • Plecos • Larger Tetras • Gouramis and other active community fish

Peaceful varieties such as Cherry Barbs can be kept with a wider range of community fish.

Avoid keeping highly active or fin-nipping Barb species with slow-moving fish that have long flowing fins, such as some Bettas and Angelfish.

Breeding

Most Barbs are egg-scattering fish.

During breeding, eggs are released among plants or substrate. Adult fish may eat the eggs, so a separate breeding aquarium is often used when raising fry.

Fine-leaved plants, spawning mops or breeding mesh can help protect the eggs.

Important Note

Different Barb species vary considerably in adult size, temperament and preferred water conditions.

For example, Cherry Barbs are relatively peaceful, while Tiger Barbs are much more active and may nip fins. Larger species such as Denison Barbs also require substantially more swimming space.

Always check the exact species before selecting aquarium size and tank companions.

With clean water, sufficient swimming space, a proper group size and a varied diet, Barbs are colourful, energetic and rewarding additions to freshwater community aquariums.
