Puffer Fish – Care Guide & Aquarium Companions

Puffer Fish are intelligent, curious and highly interactive aquarium fish known for their expressive behaviour, unusual body shape and ability to inflate when threatened.

Popular aquarium varieties include Dwarf Pea Puffers, Figure Eight Puffers, Green Spotted Puffers, Fahaka Puffers, Mbu Puffers and other freshwater or brackish species.

Because different puffers have very different requirements, it is extremely important to identify the exact species before setting up the aquarium.

Aquarium Care

Tank Size:
Tank size varies greatly depending on the species. Small Pea Puffers can be kept in relatively compact aquariums, while larger species such as Fahaka and Mbu Puffers require very large dedicated setups.

Water Temperature:
Generally around 22°C – 28°C, depending on the species.

pH Range:
Approximately 6.5 – 8.5, depending on the species.

Some puffers are fully freshwater, while others naturally occur in freshwater and brackish environments. Never add aquarium salt unless it is appropriate for the exact species.

Aquarium Setup

Puffers benefit from an enriched aquarium with plenty of places to explore.

A suitable setup may include:

  • Rocks and caves

  • Driftwood

  • Live or hardy plants

  • Plenty of hiding areas

  • Open swimming space

  • Strong filtration

  • Good oxygenation

  • Clean and stable water

  • Visual barriers between territories

Many puffers are messy eaters, so strong filtration and regular water changes are especially important.

Feeding

Puffers are generally carnivorous and require a protein-rich diet.

Suitable foods may include:

  • Snails

  • Shrimp

  • Krill

  • Mussels

  • Bloodworms

  • Earthworms

  • Brine shrimp

  • Frozen foods

  • Other suitable shellfish

Many puffer species have continuously growing teeth. Hard-shelled foods such as snails and unshelled shellfish help naturally wear them down.

Dry foods may not always be readily accepted, especially by some smaller puffer species.

Behaviour & Temperament

Puffers are intelligent and often become very responsive to their owners.

However, many species are also territorial, aggressive or known for fin-nipping.

Their strong beak-like mouth can cause serious injuries to other fish, so tank-mate selection should always be approached carefully.

Some puffers are best maintained alone in a species-only aquarium.

Suitable Tank Companions

There is no universal safe tank-mate list for Puffer Fish.

Depending on the exact species, some may tolerate:

Fast-moving Barbs • Rasboras • Certain Gobies • Robust Catfish • Otocinclus and other carefully selected species

However, compatibility is never guaranteed.

Avoid:

Long-finned fish • Slow-moving fish • Small Shrimp • Snails intended as pets • Delicate community fish

Snails and small crustaceans are often considered food rather than companions.

Important Note

Different puffer species can have completely different requirements for:

  • Adult size

  • Freshwater or brackish conditions

  • Aquarium size

  • Diet

  • Temperament

  • Tank companions

For example, Pea Puffers are small but can still be territorial and fin-nip, while larger species such as Fahaka Puffers are generally recommended as solitary fish.

Never intentionally make a Puffer Fish inflate, as inflation is normally a stress or defensive response.

With correct species identification, proper feeding, excellent water quality and an appropriately designed aquarium, Puffer Fish can be some of the most intelligent and fascinating fish in the aquarium hobby.
