Tetras – Care Guide & Aquarium Companions

Tetras are colourful, peaceful and active freshwater schooling fish that are ideal for community aquariums. They are available in a wide range of colours, sizes and patterns, making them one of the most popular groups of aquarium fish.

Popular varieties include Neon Tetras, Cardinal Tetras, Rummy Nose Tetras, Ember Tetras, Black Neon Tetras, Serpae Tetras, Lemon Tetras and many more.

Aquarium Care

Tank Size:
A minimum of around 40–60 litres is suitable for many smaller Tetra species. Larger groups and bigger varieties benefit from additional swimming space.

Water Temperature:
Generally 22°C – 28°C, depending on the species.

pH Range:
Approximately 5.5 – 7.5.

Aquarium Setup

Tetras do especially well in planted aquariums with open swimming areas.

A suitable setup can include:

  • Live plants

  • Floating plants

  • Driftwood

  • Rocks

  • Open swimming space

  • Gentle to moderate filtration

  • Clean and stable water

A darker substrate and planted background can also help bring out their natural colours.

Feeding

Tetras are generally omnivorous and accept a wide variety of foods.

Suitable foods include:

  • High-quality flakes

  • Micro pellets

  • Brine shrimp

  • Daphnia

  • Bloodworms

  • Frozen foods

  • Small live foods

A varied diet helps maintain vibrant colour, healthy growth and active behaviour.

Behaviour & Grouping

Tetras are schooling fish and should ideally be kept in groups of at least 6 or more.

Larger groups often display stronger colours and more natural schooling behaviour.

Most Tetras are peaceful, although some varieties may show mild fin-nipping if kept in groups that are too small.

Suitable Tank Companions

Tetras can usually be kept with:

Rasboras • Corydoras • Gouramis • Rams • Danios • Small Plecos • Loaches • Peaceful Barbs • Rainbowfish • Shrimp • Snails and other peaceful community fish

Choose tank companions that share similar temperature and water requirements.

Avoid large, aggressive or predatory fish that may chase or eat smaller Tetras.

Breeding

Most Tetras are egg-scattering fish.

During breeding, eggs are released among plants or substrate. Adult fish may eat the eggs, so a separate breeding setup is often used when raising fry.

Fine-leaved plants, spawning mops or breeding mesh can help protect the eggs.

Important Note

Different Tetra species can have slightly different requirements for temperature, aquarium size and temperament.

Always check the exact species before selecting tank companions.

With clean water, a proper group size, suitable companions and a varied diet, Tetras are colourful, peaceful and rewarding additions to freshwater community aquariums.
