Batik Nerite Snail
Nerite Snails – Care Guide & Aquarium Companions
Nerite Snails are peaceful, hardy and highly effective freshwater algae eaters. They are popular in planted and community aquariums because they spend much of their time grazing on algae from aquarium glass, rocks, driftwood and decorations.
They are also available in several attractive patterns and varieties, making them both useful and decorative additions to an aquarium.
Aquarium Care
Tank Size:
A minimum of around 20 litres is suitable for a small number of Nerite Snails. Larger aquariums provide more natural algae and grazing surfaces.
Water Temperature:
Generally 22°C – 28°C.
pH Range:
Approximately 7.0 – 8.5.
Water Hardness:
Moderately hard water is preferred, as calcium and minerals are important for maintaining a healthy shell.
Aquarium Setup:
Nerite Snails do well in established aquariums with rocks, driftwood, plants and natural algae growth.
Keep the aquarium covered where possible, as Nerite Snails may occasionally climb above the water line.
Feeding
Nerite Snails mainly feed on naturally occurring algae and biofilm.
Their diet can be supplemented with:
-
Algae wafers
-
Spirulina-based foods
-
Blanched vegetables
-
Natural biofilm
-
Calcium-rich snail foods
Make sure enough food is available, especially in very clean aquariums with little natural algae.
Behaviour
Nerite Snails are completely peaceful and spend most of their time slowly grazing around the aquarium.
They do not normally disturb healthy plants and are excellent for helping control algae on hard surfaces.
One major advantage of Nerite Snails is that they do not reproduce successfully in normal freshwater aquariums, making them a good choice for aquarists who do not want an uncontrolled snail population.
Suitable Tank Companions
Nerite Snails can usually be kept with:
Tetras • Rasboras • Corydoras • Gouramis • Danios • Small Plecos • Neocaridina Shrimp • Amano Shrimp and other peaceful community fish
Avoid keeping them with fish that are known to eat or attack snails, such as certain larger loaches, puffers and highly aggressive species.
Important Note
Nerite Snails require stable water conditions and sufficient minerals to maintain healthy shells.
Avoid using aquarium medications containing copper, as copper can be harmful or fatal to snails and other invertebrates.
With stable water parameters, sufficient food and suitable tank companions, Nerite Snails are an excellent natural cleaning crew for freshwater aquariums.
