Rams – Care Guide & Aquarium Companions

Rams are beautiful dwarf cichlids known for their bright colours, attractive body patterns and interesting behaviour. They are popular in planted and community aquariums because they stay relatively small while still showing the personality and territorial behaviour typical of cichlids.

Popular varieties include German Blue Rams, Electric Blue Rams, Golden Rams, Balloon Rams and Dark Knight Rams.

Aquarium Care

Tank Size:
A minimum of around 50–75 litres is suitable for a pair, while larger aquariums are recommended for community setups or multiple Rams.

Water Temperature:
Generally 26°C – 30°C.

pH Range:
Approximately 5.5 – 7.5.

Aquarium Setup:
Rams do best in mature, well-established aquariums with clean and stable water conditions.

Provide:

  • Fine sand or smooth substrate

  • Live plants

  • Driftwood and rocks

  • Caves and hiding spaces

  • Open areas for swimming

  • Gentle to moderate filtration

Good water quality is especially important, as Rams can be sensitive to sudden changes and poor water conditions.

Feeding

Rams are omnivorous and should be given a varied, protein-rich diet.

Suitable foods include:

  • High-quality cichlid pellets

  • Brine shrimp

  • Bloodworms

  • Daphnia

  • Frozen foods

  • Live foods

  • Quality flakes and micro pellets

A varied diet helps maintain strong colour, healthy growth and breeding condition.

Behaviour & Pairing

Rams are generally peaceful compared with larger cichlids, but they can become territorial, especially when breeding.

They are often kept as a compatible pair. During spawning, the pair may defend a small area of the aquarium from other fish.

Providing caves, plants and separate territories helps reduce stress and aggression.

Suitable Tank Companions

Rams can usually be kept with peaceful species such as:

Tetras • Rasboras • Corydoras • Small Plecos • Peaceful Barbs • Smaller Rainbowfish and other calm community fish

Choose companions that are comfortable in the warmer water temperatures preferred by Rams.

Avoid keeping them with large aggressive cichlids, highly territorial fish or species that may constantly harass them.

Important Note

Rams prefer warm, clean and stable water and generally perform best in an established aquarium rather than a newly set-up tank.

Different varieties may have slightly different levels of hardiness, so always acclimate new fish carefully and avoid sudden changes in temperature or water parameters.

With proper water quality, a nutritious diet and suitable tank companions, Rams can become one of the most colourful and interesting centrepiece fish in a freshwater aquarium.
