Ancistrus Plecos – Care Guide & Aquarium Companions

Ancistrus are peaceful, hardy and highly popular freshwater plecos, commonly known as Bristlenose Plecos. They are recognised by their compact body shape, sucker-like mouth and the distinctive bristles that develop around the head, especially in adult males.

They are excellent for planted and community aquariums because they remain much smaller than many common pleco species and spend much of their time grazing on algae, driftwood and aquarium surfaces.

Aquarium Care

Tank Size:
A minimum of around 75–100 litres is recommended for an adult Ancistrus. Larger aquariums are preferable when keeping more than one.

Water Temperature:
Generally 23°C – 28°C.

pH Range:
Approximately 6.5 – 7.8.

Aquarium Setup:
Ancistrus do best in mature aquariums with:

  • Driftwood

  • Caves and hiding spaces

  • Rocks

  • Live plants

  • Smooth substrate

  • Good filtration

  • Stable and clean water

Driftwood is strongly recommended, as Ancistrus naturally graze on its surface and often use it as part of their territory.

Feeding

Ancistrus are excellent algae grazers, but they should not depend only on naturally occurring algae.

Suitable foods include:

  • Algae wafers

  • Spirulina-based foods

  • Sinking pleco pellets

  • Blanched zucchini

  • Cucumber

  • Spinach

  • Green beans

  • Other vegetable-based foods

  • Occasional protein-rich foods

A varied diet helps support healthy growth, colour and body condition.

Behaviour & Temperament

Ancistrus are generally peaceful and suitable for most community aquariums.

They often spend the daytime resting under driftwood or inside caves and become more active during the evening and night.

Adult males can become territorial toward other males, especially when competing for caves or breeding areas.

Providing several caves and hiding spaces helps reduce territorial disputes.

Suitable Tank Companions

Ancistrus can usually be kept with:

Tetras • Rasboras • Corydoras • Rams • Gouramis • Rainbowfish • Danios • Peaceful Barbs • Loaches • Shrimp • Snails and other peaceful community fish

They can also be kept with many medium-sized cichlids when enough space and hiding areas are available.

Avoid highly aggressive fish that may constantly attack or injure them.

Breeding

Ancistrus are among the easier plecos to breed in home aquariums.

The male usually selects and guards a cave. The female lays eggs inside, after which the male protects and fans the eggs until they hatch.

Providing suitable caves and stable water conditions can encourage breeding.

Important Note

Most Ancistrus species and common aquarium varieties grow to around 10–15 cm, making them far more manageable than many larger plecos.

They still produce a noticeable amount of waste, so strong filtration and regular water changes are important.

With clean water, plenty of driftwood, proper feeding and adequate hiding spaces, Ancistrus are hardy, useful and attractive additions to freshwater community aquariums.
