Panaqolus Plecos – Care Guide & Aquarium Companions

Panaqolus are attractive, compact freshwater plecos known for their beautiful stripes, spots and patterns. They are often referred to as dwarf panaques or wood-eating plecos and are popular among aquarists looking for smaller, unusual pleco species.

Popular varieties include Clown Plecos, Mustard Spot Plecos and several attractive L-number Panaqolus species.

Aquarium Care

Tank Size:
A minimum of around 75–100 litres is suitable for many smaller Panaqolus species. Larger varieties or groups should be provided with additional space.

Water Temperature:
Generally 24°C – 29°C, depending on the exact species.

pH Range:
Approximately 6.0 – 7.5.

Aquarium Setup:
Panaqolus should be kept in a mature aquarium with plenty of natural structure.

A suitable setup should include:

  • Plenty of driftwood

  • Multiple caves

  • Rocks and hiding areas

  • Good filtration

  • Good water circulation

  • Clean, oxygen-rich water

  • Shaded resting areas

Driftwood is particularly important for Panaqolus, as these fish naturally rasp and consume wood and associated material. Research confirms that Panaqolus are specialised wood-feeding loricariid catfish, although studies suggest they obtain nutrition from more than simply digesting the wood itself.

Feeding

Panaqolus should never be expected to survive only on aquarium algae.

Suitable foods include:

  • Driftwood for continuous grazing

  • Algae wafers

  • Spirulina-based foods

  • Vegetable-based sinking pellets

  • Blanched zucchini

  • Cucumber

  • Pumpkin

  • Sweet potato

  • Green beans

  • Occasional protein-rich foods

A varied diet alongside constant access to driftwood helps maintain good growth and body condition.

Behaviour & Temperament

Panaqolus are generally peaceful toward fish occupying other areas of the aquarium.

However, males and other plecos may become territorial when competing for caves, wood or feeding areas.

Providing several caves and pieces of driftwood helps create separate territories and reduces aggression.

They are often most active during the evening and night.

Suitable Tank Companions

Panaqolus can usually be kept with:

Tetras • Rasboras • Corydoras • Rams • Gouramis • Rainbowfish • Danios • Peaceful Barbs • Small Loaches and other peaceful community fish

Other plecos can also be housed with them when the aquarium is large enough and sufficient caves, wood and feeding areas are provided.

Avoid highly aggressive bottom-dwelling fish that may constantly compete with them for territory.

Breeding

Many Panaqolus are cave-spawning plecos.

The male generally occupies and guards a suitable cave. After spawning, the male remains with the eggs and protects them during their development.

Providing appropriately sized caves, good water quality and a nutritious diet can encourage natural breeding behaviour.

Important Note

Different Panaqolus species and L-numbers can vary in adult size, temperature preference and exact care requirements.

Many commonly kept species remain relatively small, making them more manageable than large Panaque and common pleco varieties. For example, the popular Clown Pleco (Panaqolus maccus) reaches approximately 8–9 cm.

Always identify the exact species or L-number whenever possible before choosing aquarium size and tank companions.

With plenty of driftwood, suitable caves, good filtration and a varied diet, Panaqolus plecos can be peaceful, attractive and fascinating additions to a freshwater aquarium.
