L-204 Flash Pleco
L204 Flash Pleco – Care Guide & Aquarium Companions
The L204 Flash Pleco (Panaqolus albivermis) is an attractive freshwater pleco known for its dark body covered with striking pale cream or yellowish lines and markings.
Native to Peru, this species is especially popular among pleco collectors because of its unique pattern, manageable adult size and interesting wood-grazing behaviour. L204 is a member of the Panaqolus group and is strongly associated with driftwood in both its habitat and diet.
Aquarium Care
Tank Size:
A minimum of around 100–150 litres is recommended for an adult L204. Larger aquariums are preferable when keeping several plecos.
Adult Size:
Approximately 12–15 cm.
Water Temperature:
Generally 24°C – 29°C.
pH Range:
Approximately 6.0 – 7.5.
Aquarium Setup
Driftwood is extremely important for L204 Flash Plecos and should always be available in the aquarium.
A suitable setup should include:
-
Plenty of natural driftwood
-
Pleco caves
-
Rocks and smooth stones
-
Shaded hiding areas
-
Good filtration
-
Good oxygenation
-
Moderate water movement
-
Clean and stable water
Several pieces of wood are recommended because L204 regularly rasps and grazes on wood surfaces.
Feeding
L204 Flash Plecos are specialised wood-grazing plecos and should receive a diet containing plenty of plant material and natural fibre.
Suitable foods include:
-
Driftwood
-
Algae wafers
-
Spirulina-based foods
-
High-quality pleco pellets
-
Zucchini
-
Cucumber
-
Sweet potato
-
Peas
-
Other suitable vegetables
-
Natural biofilm
-
Occasional bloodworms, shrimp or other protein-rich foods
Protein-rich foods should generally be offered only as part of a varied diet rather than as the main food source.
Behaviour & Temperament
L204 Flash Plecos are generally peaceful toward fish that occupy other areas of the aquarium.
However, they can become territorial toward other plecos, especially around caves, wood and preferred hiding areas.
Providing several caves and separate territories can help reduce aggression.
They are generally more active during the evening and night.
Suitable Tank Companions
L204 Flash Plecos can usually be kept with:
Tetras • Rasboras • Corydoras • Rams • Gouramis • Rainbowfish • Danios • Peaceful Barbs • Angelfish and other peaceful community fish
They can also be kept with other suitable plecos when enough space, driftwood, food and caves are provided.
Avoid highly aggressive bottom-dwelling fish that may constantly compete with them for territory.
Breeding
L204 Flash Plecos are cave-spawning plecos.
The male normally selects and guards a suitable cave, where spawning takes place. Providing appropriately sized pleco caves, good water quality and a nutritious diet can encourage breeding behaviour.
Important Note
L204 Flash Plecos should not be purchased simply as algae cleaners.
Driftwood is an important part of their natural feeding behaviour and should always be available in the aquarium.
They also produce a noticeable amount of wood waste and faecal material, so good filtration and regular water changes are important.
With plenty of driftwood, clean oxygen-rich water, suitable caves and a varied plant-rich diet, the L204 Flash Pleco can be an attractive and rewarding addition to a freshwater aquarium.
