Flower Horn
Flowerhorn Cichlid – Care Guide & Aquarium Companions
Flowerhorn Cichlids are large, intelligent and highly interactive freshwater fish known for their bold colours, unique markings and distinctive head growth known as a kok.
They are popular as centrepiece fish because of their strong personality and tendency to recognize and interact with their owner. Flowerhorns are powerful and territorial cichlids, so they require considerably more space and planning than typical community fish.
Aquarium Care
Tank Size:
A minimum aquarium of around 250–300 litres is recommended for a single adult Flowerhorn. Larger tanks are always better because these fish grow large and require plenty of swimming space.
Water Temperature:
Generally 27°C – 30°C.
pH Range:
Approximately 7.0 – 8.0.
Aquarium Setup:
Flowerhorns require a spacious aquarium with strong filtration.
A suitable setup should include:
-
Plenty of open swimming space
-
Smooth rocks or sturdy decorations
-
Strong filtration
-
Good water circulation
-
Regular water changes
-
Secure aquarium lid
Avoid sharp decorations that could injure the fish when it becomes excited or territorial.
Delicate plants are usually not recommended because Flowerhorns may dig, move decorations or damage plants.
Feeding
Flowerhorns are omnivorous but require a high-quality, protein-rich and balanced diet.
Suitable foods include:
-
Premium Flowerhorn or cichlid pellets
-
Krill
-
Shrimp
-
Bloodworms
-
Insect-based foods
-
Occasional frozen or live foods
A varied diet can support healthy growth, strong colour and overall condition.
Avoid excessive feeding. Overfeeding can lead to poor water quality and digestive problems.
Behaviour & Temperament
Flowerhorns are highly territorial and can be aggressive toward other fish.
For this reason, they are generally best kept alone in their own aquarium.
They are intelligent and interactive fish and may:
-
Follow their owner around the aquarium
-
Respond during feeding
-
Defend their territory
-
Rearrange decorations and substrate
-
Develop individual personalities
Suitable Tank Companions
A single-species setup is usually the safest option for Flowerhorns.
Keeping Flowerhorns with other fish can be risky because of their aggressive and territorial behaviour.
In very large aquariums, experienced aquarists sometimes attempt to keep them with large, robust fish, but compatibility is never guaranteed and fish should be monitored closely.
Avoid housing them with:
Small Tetras • Rasboras • Shrimp • Corydoras • Small Plecos • Gouramis • Small Cichlids and other peaceful or slow-moving fish
Smaller fish may be attacked, injured or eaten.
Important Note
Flowerhorns can grow to approximately 25–35 cm, depending on genetics, sex and variety.
Strong filtration and regular water changes are especially important because these large cichlids produce a significant amount of waste.
Their colour, body shape and kok development are influenced by genetics, nutrition, water quality and overall care.
With sufficient space, excellent water quality, proper nutrition and responsible handling, a Flowerhorn can become an impressive and highly interactive centrepiece fish for a freshwater aquarium.
