Dollar Fish – Care Guide & Aquarium Companions

Silver Dollar Fish are peaceful, active and attractive freshwater schooling fish known for their round, laterally compressed bodies and shiny silver appearance.

Closely related to piranhas and pacus, Silver Dollars are generally much more peaceful and are popular in larger community aquariums. They are strong swimmers and look especially impressive when kept in groups.

Aquarium Care

Tank Size:
A minimum of around 200–250 litres is recommended for a group of Silver Dollars. Larger aquariums are preferable because they are active swimmers and can grow relatively large.

Water Temperature:
Generally 24°C – 28°C.

pH Range:
Approximately 6.0 – 7.5.

Aquarium Setup

Silver Dollars require plenty of open swimming space along with secure hiding areas.

A suitable setup should include:

  • Large open swimming areas

  • Driftwood

  • Rocks

  • Strong filtration

  • Good oxygenation

  • Moderate water movement

  • A secure aquarium lid

  • Hardy or artificial plants

Silver Dollars may eat or damage many soft aquarium plants, so planted tanks should use tougher species where possible.

Feeding

Silver Dollars are primarily omnivorous with a strong preference for vegetable matter.

Suitable foods include:

  • Spirulina flakes

  • Vegetable-based pellets

  • Algae wafers

  • Blanched spinach

  • Zucchini

  • Peas

  • Lettuce

  • High-quality flakes and pellets

  • Brine shrimp

  • Bloodworms and other protein-rich foods occasionally

Plant-based foods should form an important part of their regular diet.

Behaviour & Grouping

Silver Dollars are schooling fish and should ideally be kept in groups of at least 5–6 or more.

Keeping them in a proper group helps them feel more secure and encourages natural schooling behaviour.

They are generally peaceful but can become nervous when kept alone or in very small groups.

Because they are fast and active swimmers, they are best housed with fish that are comfortable with similar activity levels.

Suitable Tank Companions

Silver Dollars can usually be kept with:

Oscars • Severums • Larger Peaceful Cichlids • Large Plecos • Synodontis Catfish • Larger Rainbowfish • Larger Barbs and other similarly sized community fish

They can work particularly well as companion fish for larger South American cichlids when sufficient aquarium space is available.

Avoid keeping them with very small fish that could be intimidated or potentially eaten.

Very aggressive fish should also be avoided.

Adult Size

Depending on the species, Silver Dollars can commonly grow to around 12–20 cm or more.

Because they are schooling fish, aquarium size should be planned around a full group rather than a single specimen.

Important Note

Silver Dollars are strong swimmers and can become easily startled, so provide plenty of open space and avoid sudden movements around the aquarium.

They are also known to eat aquarium plants, so carefully select plants or use artificial decorations if maintaining a heavily planted setup is important.

With a spacious aquarium, proper group size, strong filtration and a varied plant-rich diet, Silver Dollar Fish are peaceful and impressive additions to larger freshwater community aquariums.
