Care Guide & Aquarium Companions

Loaches are active, curious and highly entertaining freshwater fish known for their unique body shapes, playful behaviour and excellent bottom-dwelling activity. Depending on the species, loaches can range from small peaceful community fish to larger, more energetic varieties.

Many loaches enjoy exploring caves, plants, driftwood and the aquarium substrate, making them an excellent addition to a well-planned community aquarium.

Aquarium Care

Tank Size:
Tank size depends on the species. Smaller loaches can be kept in medium-sized aquariums, while larger varieties require considerably more swimming space.

Water Temperature:
Generally 22°C – 28°C, depending on the species.

pH Range:
Approximately 6.0 – 7.5.

Substrate:
Fine sand or smooth gravel is recommended, as many loaches spend their time searching and digging through the bottom of the aquarium.

Aquarium Setup:
Provide plenty of hiding spaces using driftwood, rocks, caves and live plants. Good filtration and clean, oxygen-rich water are important for keeping loaches healthy.

Feeding

Loaches are generally omnivorous and should be provided with a varied diet including:

  • Sinking pellets or wafers

  • Frozen or live bloodworms

  • Brine shrimp

  • Tubifex and other protein-rich foods

  • Vegetable-based foods

  • Snails for certain loach species

A varied diet helps maintain healthy growth, colour and activity.

Behaviour & Grouping

Many loach species are social fish and perform best when kept in groups. Keeping them with their own species helps them feel more secure and encourages natural behaviour.

Some varieties can be shy when first introduced but usually become more active once they are comfortable in their aquarium.

Suitable Tank Companions

Depending on the species and aquarium size, loaches can be kept with:

Tetras • Rasboras • Barbs • Danios • Rainbowfish • Gouramis • Angelfish • Corydoras • Peaceful Catfish • Plecos and other suitable community fish

Avoid keeping smaller or peaceful loaches with highly aggressive or territorial fish.

Important Note

Care requirements may vary between different loach species. Always check the adult size, temperament and water requirements of the specific variety before adding it to your aquarium.

With proper water quality, suitable companions and enough hiding spaces, loaches can become one of the most active and interesting additions to a freshwater aquarium.
