Anubias Plants – Care Guide & Aquarium Compatibility

Anubias are hardy, slow-growing freshwater aquarium plants known for their thick green leaves, strong root systems and ability to grow well under low-light conditions.

They are one of the easiest aquarium plants to maintain and are suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists. Popular varieties include Anubias Nana, Anubias Barteri, Anubias Petite, Anubias Coffeefolia, Anubias Congensis and many more.

Aquarium Care

Water Temperature:
Generally 20°C – 28°C.

pH Range:
Approximately 6.0 – 8.0.

Lighting:
Low to moderate lighting is usually sufficient.

Anubias do not require intense lighting and may develop algae on their slow-growing leaves if exposed to excessive light.

Planting & Placement

Anubias have a thick horizontal stem called a rhizome.

The rhizome should never be completely buried under the substrate, as this can cause it to rot.

Anubias are best attached to:

  • Driftwood

  • Rocks

  • Aquarium decorations

  • Hardscape

  • Crevices between stones

The roots can grow naturally around these surfaces over time.

Growth & Maintenance

Anubias are slow-growing plants and generally require very little maintenance.

They can benefit from:

  • Stable water conditions

  • Moderate nutrients

  • Gentle water movement

  • Regular water changes

  • Occasional liquid fertiliser

CO₂ supplementation is not required, although it may improve overall growth.

Damaged or old leaves can be trimmed close to the rhizome.

Aquarium Compatibility

Anubias are suitable for many freshwater aquarium setups, including:

Community Aquariums • Shrimp Tanks • Betta Tanks • Pleco Aquariums • Cichlid Tanks • Nano Aquariums • Planted Tanks

Their tough leaves make them a good option for many fish that may damage softer aquarium plants.

Suitable Fish & Tank Companions

Anubias can be kept with a wide variety of aquarium inhabitants, including:

Tetras • Rasboras • Bettas • Gouramis • Corydoras • Plecos • Loaches • Danios • Rainbowfish • Rams • Shrimp • Snails and many other freshwater species

They are also commonly used in aquariums with larger fish because their thick leaves are more resistant to damage than many delicate plants.

Propagation

Anubias are easy to propagate by dividing the rhizome.

Cut a healthy section of rhizome containing several leaves and roots, then attach the new section to another rock or piece of driftwood.

Over time, both sections will continue producing new leaves and roots.

Important Note

Do not bury the Anubias rhizome underneath gravel, sand or soil.

Only the roots may be placed into the substrate while the thick rhizome should remain exposed.

Because Anubias grow slowly, algae can sometimes develop on their leaves. Moderate lighting, good water quality and suitable algae-eating tank companions can help control this.

With low lighting, stable water conditions and correct planting, Anubias are extremely hardy, attractive and easy-to-maintain plants for almost any freshwater aquarium.
